How do you determine the price of custom metalwork?

This is a common question in any industry: what is the bottom line i.e. price? Many factors will play a role in determinig the cost of your specific project. Here is a brief introduction to some of the variables that go into the calculation of your custom metal piece.

First, we need to determine the thickness of the metal, which is based on the end use of the piece (indoors, outdoors, signage, fire pit, automotive part, etc.). We also need to consider the size of the piece you would like to create. Metal prices are determined by weight and fluctuate daily.

The next consideration is any logo or design you have supplied for creating the piece. Some image quality and formats are easier to work with than others. The CAD program we use to make your image come to life is managed by a skilled technician . Depending on the complexity/intricacy of your item, the designer may need to spend hours on your piece to get all the details just right. Most pieces are one of a kind are not able to be reused for future projects.

Once we have the CAD file ready, we head down to the shop where the magic happens. This is where the CNC plasma table will interpret the file and cut the metal to your specifications. Plasma tables vary in price starting around 10 thousand dollars to hundreds of thousands of dollars. They require maintenance, consumable parts, electricity, and skilled labor to operate. The steel we use to create your custom piece starts as a heavy sheet of 5ft x 10ft metal that requires heavy machinery (forklift or crane) to place and position onto the table. Once the metal is in place, our technician will start the cutting process and remove your piece after it is cut.

Lastly, most pieces require some level of finish out before we can present them to the customer. Cutting metal creates a chunky build up (AKA dross or slag) that requires grinding to create smooth edges. Also, steel will rust if left untreated, which means the part will need painting or powder coating. Some people wish to hang their piece with brackets or dowel rods and some like to incorporate additional parts to create dimension. This results in a very cool effect and may require welding to attach these pieces properly. Each of these processes (grinding, painting, welding) requires supplies, equipment, skill, and time to put the finishing touches on your custom creation.
